What makes Jaipur water hard on a purifier?

Jaipur runs largely on groundwater, and Rajasthan's groundwater is characterised by two things that matter to an RO owner: hardness and fluoride.

The Bureau of Indian Standards drinking water specification, IS 10500, sets the acceptable limits at 200 mg/l for total hardness, 500 mg/l for total dissolved solids, 1.0 mg/l for fluoride and 45 mg/l for nitrate, with higher figures permissible only where no alternate source exists. Groundwater across large parts of Rajasthan, Jaipur district included, is documented as exceeding the fluoride limit.

That matters because fluoride is one of the contaminants a working RO membrane actually removes — a sediment or carbon filter does not touch it. Long-term intake above the limit is linked to dental and skeletal fluorosis, which is why a Jaipur household should care whether its membrane is still rejecting properly, not just whether water is coming out.

Hardness is the second problem. Calcium and magnesium scale the membrane and the flow path, which shortens membrane life, slows output, and makes the booster pump work harder. In the harder pockets of the city we routinely see membranes needing replacement sooner than the manual's default schedule assumes. We measure TDS at the inlet and the outlet on every visit, because the difference between the two readings is the only reliable way to tell whether the membrane is still doing its job.

Which Eureka Forbes purifier problems do we fix?

• White scaling, chalky residue or a bitter taste – hardness getting past a membrane that is at the end of its life.
• No water at all – a failed SMPS adapter, a jammed solenoid valve, or a booster pump that has stopped priming.
• Slow flow or a tank that never fills – choked sediment or carbon pre-filters, or a scaled membrane.
• Error lights on the indicator panel – filter-life alerts, UV failure warnings or a sensor fault. The panel narrows down where to look; it does not always mean a part has failed.
• Continuous drain / the unit never switches off – a faulty float valve, TDS controller or auto-cut assembly.
• Leakage – perished push-fit connectors, a cracked filter housing, or an over-tightened bowl.
• UV lamp not glowing – a failed lamp or ballast. UV output falls long before the lamp stops lighting, which is why it is a scheduled replacement rather than a repair.
• Loud humming or vibration – mounting grommets, or a pump approaching failure.

The technician diagnoses the actual cause on site and confirms the price before fitting anything. If a unit is not worth repairing, we will tell you that.
