People think that higher the TDS value means higher the hardness but it is not correct. TDS is defined as the total concentration of the dissolved substance in the water. TDS includes both organic and inorganic matter. Hard water doesn't become hard in nature due to the higher TDS value but it is due to the higher concentration of calcium and magnesium salts. A water softener doesn't reduce the TDS level it only replaces the salts of calcium and magnesium from the water with sodium salts.
Classification of water:
On the basis of TDS water is classified into four groups. These are Freshwater, Brackish water, Saline water, and Hyper-saline water. TDS is measured in ppm i.e. part per million or milligram per unit volume of water i.e. mg/L.
- Freshwater- TDS level is less than or equal to the 500 ppm
- Brackish water- TDS level of brackish water is about 500-30,000 ppm
- Saline water- TDS of saline water is around 30,000 to 40,000 ppm
- Hyper-saline water- TDS level is greater than 40,000 ppm
Types of water softener:
On the basis of uses, the water softener is of three types such as domestic, commercial, and industrial water softener plant. But on the basis of used technology water softener is of several types. Read and find all types of the water softener.
A water softener is of different types and all of them uses different technology to removes the salts of the calcium and magnesium. These are Ion Exchange, salt-free, electromagnetic, and double tank water softener system.
These types of a water softener are based on the resin beads which contains sodium. When the water containing salts of calcium and magnesium comes in contact with the resin the sodium leaves the resin and enters in the water and the calcium and magnesium leaves the water and gets associated with the resin. This process is known as ion exchange that is why it is called an ion exchange water softener. When the resin gets low in sodium ions, more sodium ions are added into the resin which is called as charging of the resin. Ion exchange provides sufficient water softening solution.
This types of water softener don't use sodium to removes calcium and magnesium. It is based on the potassium ions so if anyone is concern about the sodium then salt-free water softener treatment system is best for them.
This form of water softener uses electromagnetic force to eliminate the calcium and magnesium salts from the water. It produces a signal which induces collide of the ion with each other. This water softener allows the calcium to grow until the surface charge of the calcium become negligible so it losses its ability to bind with more ions.
This form of water softener contains two tanks for the softening of water. It provides efficient and proper softening of water compared to the other water softener system.
Water Softener and Water Purifier:
Most of the people don’t know the difference between the water softener and water purifier. As you know that water softener only removes the salts of the calcium and magnesium from the water and don't deal with the other types of the impurities whereas water purifier removes or reduces the TDS level along with the other types of the water impurities such as microbial contamination and etc.
