In this process, sewage is particle decomposed by bacteria in a tank without the introduction of air and oxygen. In this process, organic waste is decomposed into methane, Hydrogen Sulphide, Carbon Dioxide, etc. anaerobic sewage treatment plant is used to treat wastewater sludge and organic waste because it provides the volume and mass reduction of the input material at the large extent. The methane produced by the large scale municipal anaerobic sludge treatment is used in the household and industries for heating purposes.
The best example of the anaerobic sewage treatment plant is the septic tank. But the amount of methane produced by a septic tank is very less. A septic tank contains 70% of the primary pollutant, and the process comes out with an unpleasant smell. The smell comes out in this process in dying the Hydrogen sulphide if it is not vented correctly. The effluent produced by this process is highly polluted. Thus it can not be discharged to any water source. Hence this effluent is released into the aerobic layer of the soil so that the aerobic bacteria can digest the pollutant in the effluent.
In this process, water is used to treat by using aerobic bacteria. An aerobic bacteria need oxygen to digest the pollutant. In aerobic sewage treatment plant air is supplied to the Biozone either by direct Surface Aeration using impellers propelled by pumps that whisk the surface of the liquid with the air or by submerged Diffused aeration using the bowlers for air supply through the bubble diffusers at the bottom of the tank.
The aerobic condition leads to the formation of an aerobic bacteria colony. This condition achieves almost complete oxidation and digestion of organic matter & organic pollutants to carbon dioxide, water, nitrogen, hence removes the odor and contamination of the sludge. The effluent produce by this process is entirely free from contamination, and it can be discharged into the watercourse.
A typical STP plant includes either two or three stages, namely primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment. Before these treatments, preliminary removes of rags, clothes, sanitary items, etc. are also carried out at municipal sewage works.
This is an anaerobic treatment. In this process, solids are eliminated from the sewage. In this process, the solids contamination get settled out at the bottom of the primary settlement tank. The sludge is continuously being reduced in volume by the anaerobic process, which results in a vastly reduced total mass when compared with the original volume entered in the system.
This is also an aerobic condition. After the primary treatment, the liquid enters the secondary treatment process, which contains dissolved and particulate biological matter. Here in this step, the wastewater is wholly converted into clean and pure water. The water is converted into the pure and clean water by using bacteria which digest the pollutant present in water. But in most cases, the wastewater treated in this process can be discharged directly to rivers.
In some cases, the effluent resulting from secondary treatment is not completely clean. Thus it can not be directly discharged into water. Therefore to completely clean the water, this wastewater is treated by another process called tertiary treatment.
